Another great afternoon on the water with the Coastal Bend Model Yacht Club!

Four RC Laser sailors made it out today: Mike Causey, William Ramlo, Matthew Allen, and Eric Gregory. The weather was looking good, and once again the L-Head delivered some fantastic sailing conditions.

We started the afternoon with a mild northeast breeze while we set up, but as we began sailing together, the wind started clocking toward the east and steadily building. We spent most of the day sailing B rigs, but by around 3 PM we were definitely getting into C-rig territory. Not long afterward, we made the switch, and the smaller sails gave us much more control and stability as the wind continued to build.

By the end of the afternoon, whitecaps were stretching across the bay and a pretty good chop had developed around the L-Head. It made for some exciting RC Laser sailing!

⛵ Plenty of Action Around the L-Head

It was great watching the young O’pen Skiff sailors from Corpus Christi Yacht Club come out for their training and practice. We normally sail in different areas, but as their practice winds down, one or two of them almost always manage to make their way over and sail alongside the RC Lasers.

We always enjoy having them come over and mix it up with us—and hopefully their coaches don’t mind! 😂

Matt Allen’s young son, William, seemed to have a blast hanging around our group, checking out the boats and equipment, and I think I even caught his dad handing him the RC controls for a little while. It’s always great seeing the next generation getting interested in sailing!

And once again, we had our cheerful “Boom-Vang” Gregory back from college, helping pump up the buoys and get our course set up. It’s good having him back on the water!

A big thank you to William Ramlo for bringing out his pop-up tent again. The wind speeds and direction were actually cooperative enough that his tent stake anchors held just fine, and that shade felt fantastic. It was especially welcome during the warm afternoon.

🌊 Looking Ahead — The 10th Anniversary Saltwater Challenge

We also took some time today to talk about the 10th Anniversary Saltwater Challenge, and I asked the group how everyone felt about holding the event here at the L-Head. Everyone seemed comfortable with the idea, and there are some very good reasons to consider this location.

The L-Head makes loading and unloading incredibly convenient, there is plenty of room for our equipment, and that section of the parking lot doesn’t appear to get a tremendous amount of use.

There is, however, quite a bit of construction activity in the area right now. Our next step will be to follow up with the Corpus Christi Parks Department and the Harbor Master’s Office to make sure our proposed dates are compatible with the ongoing construction and any other activities planned for the site.

Hopefully we can get the all-clear, because we think the L-Head could be a fantastic location for the 10th Anniversary Saltwater Challenge! ⛵🌊

⛵ Come Sail With Us!

And to all the local sailors, racers, hobbyists, and sailing enthusiasts—the Coastal Bend Model Yacht Club is your local AMYA-sanctioned RC sailing club, and we’d love to have you come out and see what we’re all about.

Just understand that there’s a pretty good chance someone will hand you a radio and happily introduce you to the art of sailing an RC Laser! 😂

If you have experience with sailboat racing, you’ll be amazed at the speed, action, excitement, and close-quarters racing of the RC Lasers. The tactics and skills involved have a remarkable similarity to big-boat racing, just on a much smaller scale.

And if you’re more interested in the modeling side, we’ll be happy to talk about some of the projects our members are working on—including 3D-printed boat hulls and custom RC sailing projects.

Whatever your interest, we’d love to hear about it and talk sailing with you. So don’t be shy—come on out, see what we’re all about, and feel free to bring a friend!

The more the merrier!

📅 Our next group Sail Out is scheduled for Saturday, October 17th, from 12–4 PM.

⛵🌊 Hope to see everyone on the water!

Fair winds!
