What a fantastic afternoon of sailing from the L-Head in beautiful downtown Corpus Christi!

The wind absolutely delivered today, blowing a steady 15–20 mph out of the south-southeast all afternoon. It was classic Corpus Christi Bay sailing—strong, steady, and clean with very little swirl. We started the day in C rigs, but after one too many duck dives, it became obvious it was time to switch over to D rigs. Once we did, the boats really came alive. There’s just something special about driving an RC Laser at full speed under perfect control in a strong breeze.

We had five sailors on the water today:
• John Weston
• John Rodriguez
• Matt Allen
• William Ramlo
• Eric Gregory

Also joining us were my son, William, and Matt’s two boys, who kept themselves entertained around the sailing area. Later, Matt’s wife and daughter stopped by, making it a great afternoon for the whole family.

One funny observation from the day—we somehow ended up with two Johns and three Williams in the group! Every time someone called out a name, several heads turned. I guess we’ll have to go back to calling my son by his childhood nickname, “Boom-Vang.” That should solve at least one of the duplicates! 😄

A special welcome goes out to John Weston, who joined us for the first time. John brought two beautiful RC Lasers that looked as though they had barely touched the water. One of the great things about the RC Laser class is that the design never changes, so a boat built years ago is just as competitive today as one built yesterday. Judging by how quickly John got back into the groove, I have no doubt he’ll be racing at the front of the fleet before long. Thanks for coming out, John—we hope to see you again soon! And thank you as well for taking photos and helping capture the day.

We were also pleased to welcome John Rodriguez from San Antonio, who has enthusiastically taken up RC Laser sailing this year. It was great having you with us, John. We hope this will be the first of many visits to Corpus Christi!

William Ramlo mounted a GoPro aboard his boat to capture some on-the-water footage. It’s always entertaining watching William chase everyone around with the camera. At first, it feels pretty good seeing him behind you… until you remember he’s slowing down on purpose to get the shot! 😂

The new L-Head venue continues to impress. Being able to back our vehicles right up to the breakwater makes unloading and setting up incredibly easy. We even attempted to set up shade canopies anchored with five-gallon water buckets, but today’s wind had other ideas! Sometimes you just have to accept that Mother Nature is in charge.

A sincere thank you to the Corpus Christi Marina and the Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department for maintaining such a beautiful public space. We truly appreciate your efforts in providing a first-class venue for our hobby.

Our next scheduled Sail Out is Saturday, August 15, from 12:00–4:00 PM, right here at the L-Head. We hope you’ll come join us—and bring a friend! Visitors are always welcome to experience the fun of radio-controlled sailing.

Fair winds, and we’ll see you on the water! ⛵
